If there is one thing scientists love discussing more than the beginning of the universe, it would be its end. Now no one can predict the cause or exact time of this occurring, but here are 8 possible theories that could determine on how the universe will end.
1: The Big Crunch
The Big Crunch theory is the opposite of the Big Bang. According to this theory, the expansion of the universe slows down to a point where it halts and begins to contract instead. This contraction will bring all planets, stars, galaxies, black holes, everything back to the centre, until it becomes an infinitely dense singularity just like before the big bang, wiping out everything.
2: The Inevitable Heat Death of the Universe
The Heat Death is the opposite of the Big Crunch theory. According to this theory, the universe keeps on expanding exponentially and all planets, galaxies, stars drift far away from each other. Eventually the stars, will all wink out, one by one and there won’t be enough energy to from new ones. The entire universe will go dark.
3: Heath Death via Black Holes
According to this theory, black holes would eventually devour most of the matter and the universe would be left in complete darkness. Massive black holes would consume the smaller ones to become even larger. Over time, black holes evaporate and start to die. There would be nothing left of our universe other than an even distribution of subatomic hawking radiation particles.
4: The End of Time
According to this theory, the time will lose its momentum and freeze. Time would just grind to a halt and everything will be frozen, like a snapshot in one instant, forever!
5: The Big Rip
As you can see in the picture above, the universe continues to expand at an accelerating speed. According to the big rip theory, this expansion will eventually speed up so much that the universe can’t take any more and rips itself apart.
6: The Big Freeze
The Big Freeze also referred to as “The Big Chill”, is a theory in which the universe continues to expand at an increasing speed and as this happens, heat is dispersed throughout space. The universe will get colder and colder until the temperature reaches absolute zero. The universe will freeze completely and all stars would eventually lose access to raw materials to form new stars, leaving the universe in complete darkness.
7: The Big Slurp
Scientists state that the vacuum of our universe may be inherently unstable and perhaps existing in a perpetual “metastable” state. According to this theory, our universe may experience a catastrophic event, in which a “bubble” from another alternate universe appears in ours. The bubble will exist in a lower- energy state than our bubble, and may destroy the whole universe.
8: The Eternal Universe
According to this theory, the universe may never come to an end and may continue to expand and contract forever.
It may be possible that the fate of our universe may be different, but scientists believe one of these theories may lead to the end of the universe.
